Dust Particles

Causes behind the problem

Dust can be found in the air, on surfaces and on fabrics. Paper, cardboard, clothes and wood are just a few of the common sources that drum up dust inside the home. Wind-blown dust from outside can enter your home through cracks and windows.

Health effects

If you have allergies, you know the real problem is not the dust itself, but rather the mites that live in it. Dust mites are microscopic creatures that feed off human skin scales. They are one of the most common allergen triggers for asthma, especially in humid and coastal parts of Australia*.

Things you can do to reduce dust in the home

  1. Dust your home regularly with a damp rag so you don’t stir up particles
  2. Use airtight plastic covers or allergen-proof fabric covers to encase mattresses, box springs and pillows and protect them against dust mites
  3. Wash bedding frequently
  4. Use hot water (at least 55 degC) and high heat to clean sheets once a week, and mattress pads, blankets and comforter covers once a month
  5. If you can’t wash in hot water, use a commercial product containing essential oils such as tea tree or eucalyptus, formulated to kill dust mites in cold water. Hot tumble drying of washed items for 10 minutes after they are dry will also kill mites*.
  6. Wash children’s stuffed animals in hot water or place them in a plastic zipper bag and then put in the freezer overnight to kill dust mites
  7. Regularly change the filters on your heating and air-conditioning system
  8. Reduce indoor humidity by having a dry and well ventilated home with floor and wall insulation and no evaporative coolers or unflued gas heaters*
  9. Use a vacuum with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter
